Common bird; Uncommon Pose

Great Blue Heron "flashing" me!  (click to enlarge)
Fujifilm X-T4; 55-200mm f/3.5-4.8 lens @ 200mm; 1/125th sec. @ f/8; ISO 160
This represents 30% of the original image.

In the midst of the daunting tasks ahead in strategizing, planning, preparing, packing, moving and storing our household items (we've sold our home and are contracting to build a new one), I found a moment yesterday morning on the way home from the hardware store to stop by one of the nearby ponds to see if there was anything worthy of making an image.

I saw this Great Blue Heron sitting on this downed tree.  As I made a few images in my attempt at getting some much needed "shutter therapy" as well as to exercise my "shutter finger," the heron spread its wings.  I've photographed many, many GBHs but I've never seen one "pose" in this manner.  Cormorants yes, herons no.  You regular wildlife photographers out there may have seen this but the pose was unusual for me.  Certainly worthy of an image or two.

This reminded me of a dirty old man opening his trench coat and "flashing" passersby.  Do you think the heron was "flashing" me?  Lol.

  1. dear Dennis, i read your stories a lot. I like them. I once too saw a bird in this manner. I am not so good at recognising birds but to me it is not a cormorant - and looks like some sort of heron. i can send you the picture if you like

    1. Klaas, thank you for your comment and compliment. The bird is a Great Blue Heron. Very common in the U.S. I found how the bird is sitting to be rather unusual.
