Having A Camera With You

Many of my images can be found at www.dennismook.com.  Please pay it a visit.  I add new images regularly. I've just added a gallery featuring all M4/3 images.  Soon, I will be adding a gallery of all Fuji X-Trans images. Thank you.

I first seriously picked up a camera in the spring of 1970.  I have had one by my side almost every day since.  Because of almost always having a camera nearby, I've been able to make photographs of interesting subjects that otherwise would have just been distant memories.

Just the other day, I was wandering through the countryside and passed an early summer cornfield with an old abandoned tobacco barn out in the middle of it.  As I passed, it caught my eye, which is usually a signal that there is something pleasing about what I had seen.  It is at this point that how you think and how serious you are about your photography makes a difference in what actions you next take.

In the past, I would often times note the scene and think to myself that I'll stop on the way back.  Of course, it is never the same when returning later.  Something will have changed about it, at least the light.  After realizing that if I didn't stop right then, I would miss the scene, I now always stop when something catches my eye.  Lessons learned. In this case, I stopped, turned around, went back and made some images.

The image above is no great image.  But, to me, there is just something serene and pleasant about it. This is certainly a "So What" image as it won't make any difference to anyone. It won't change the world nor even be remarkable.  It will be a visual reminder of that feeling of seeing it on that one particular day, however.  At the same time, making the image keeps me in the habit of stopping and photographing when I should and not procrastinating and driving by.

Thanks for looking.  Enjoy!

  1. I think that image of the barn is perfect. The bucolic looking clouds in the background do it for me. Reminds me of a lazy summer day.
I have an image taken in Lancaster County Amish country of rows of corn. I took it because of the pattern the corn made as they receded into the background. Wouldn't you know it, it's sold almost 1600 times over year after year after year. It's strange what one considers a good image, and one others consider good. Would I hang the corn photo in my home? No. But with the money generated from snapping TWO images, and keeping one, I can hang whatever else I want.
    Again: love that barn!
