Mistakes Photographers Make—Example VI

Another example of common mistakes we photographers make is not having separation in our subjects.

Whether that separation is a person from an object, like  a pole that appears to be coming out of the top of a person's head or two people walking in the distance, as in the image to the right.  Putting "air" between two individuals or an individual and an object allows the viewer to better discriminate between the two objects.

Looking at the image above and right you can see what I mean.  The man is slightly in front of the woman and "merged" with the woman.  Behind the couple is another individual off in the distance.  Looking at this image, it appears as though there is something sticking out of the woman's shoulder, but we really can't tell what it is.  It distracts the viewer and detracts from the image.
Waiting until the subjects had "air" between them improved the composition of this image.
Waiting until the individuals far off in the background have moved away from behind our main subjects as well as waiting for the subjects to slightly separate, really improves this image.

Thanks for looking. Enjoy!
